Short answer
Buy Heroes of the Borderlands. It's the current starter, it follows the 2024 rules direction, and it's the easiest for a group that has never played. Pick Dragons of Stormwreck Isle only if you want the cheapest possible taste (the digital edition) or your group is sticking with the 2014 books.

Heroes of the Borderlands
This is the biggest box and the most different from a normal D&D book. Your character lives on a class board, with cards for spells, gear and abilities laid out in front of you, so nobody flips through pages mid-fight. Characters reach level 3 and pick between two subclasses for each of the four classes. The three adventure booklets (the Wilderness, the Caves of Chaos and the Keep on the Borderlands) are built to replay, so a group can get many sessions out of one box.
Two things to know. It only covers four classes, so a player set on a Bard or Druid will have to wait for the Player's Handbook. And although the box says 3 to 5 players, Wizards' demo guide for store events sets a strict maximum of four players plus a DM, which matches the four classes in the box.
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle
A slim box with a short rulebook, an adventure booklet, five ready-made characters and one set of dice. It's a good, focused introduction, but it uses the 2014 rules, so a group that later buys the 2024 Player's Handbook will notice differences in classes and spells. D&D Beyond listed it as out of stock when we checked, with digital pricing from $14.99.
Essentials Kit
The Essentials Kit was built to work with just one player and a DM, using nine sidekick cards to fill out the party, and its adventure runs longer than the other two (to level 6). D&D Beyond now marks it as legacy content and no longer available, so any copy you find is leftover store stock. If you find one and want to play as a pair, it's still a good buy; otherwise, skip it.
Choose in three questions
- Has anyone in the group played before? If nobody has, get Heroes of the Borderlands. The boards and cards do a lot of the teaching.
- Are there only two of you? Look for a leftover Essentials Kit, or use Heroes of the Borderlands with one player running two characters.
- Do you want to spend as little as possible to try it? Buy the Stormwreck Isle digital edition on D&D Beyond, then move to the 2024 Player's Handbook if the group sticks with it.
