Verdict
Better than the old version and a good choice for an archer who wants decisions each turn. Ever-Ready Shot fixes the old complaint of running out of shots, and the Indomitable teleport is a real escape button. It's still a Fighter at heart, so expect steady damage rather than spell-level effects.
How it plays
You stand back, attack with a longbow (twice a turn from level 5), and save Arcane Shot for the hit that sets up the party. Most turns look like any archer's. The difference shows when things go wrong: a miss can curve toward a new target, a passed Indomitable save doubles as an escape teleport, and from level 18 enemies who miss you pay for it. Outside combat you have a cantrip and two knowledge skills, which a plain Fighter lacks.
Features by level
| Level | Feature | What it does, in short |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Arcane Archer Lore | Learn Druidcraft or Prestidigitation, and gain Arcana and Nature proficiency. |
| 3 | Arcane Shot | Attach special magical effects to ranged hits. Uses come back on rests, and the effects get stronger as you level. |
| 7 | Curving Shot | After a miss, send the shot toward a different target. |
| 7 | Magical Ammunition | Enchant an arrow with a utility trick: help an escape, open a nonmagical lock or climb. |
| 10 | Ever-Ready Shot | Roll Initiative and one spent Arcane Shot use returns. |
| 15 | Indomitable Teleport | Pass a save with Indomitable and you can teleport up to 60 feet. |
| 18 | Masterful Shots | When a creature misses you, use your Reaction to move and shoot back. |
Feature names and levels follow two post-release breakdowns of the book (DungeonMister and Brandes Stoddard, September 2026), which agree with each other and with Wizards' preview on what each feature does. We haven't seen the printed text ourselves, so check your copy for exact wording.
Trigger map
Keep this next to your character sheet. Each feature answers one moment in a fight.
| When this happens | Use | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| You hit with a ranged attack | Arcane Shot | Your main resource; spend it on the hit that matters, not the first one |
| You miss | Curving Shot | Turns a wasted attack into a second chance on a new target |
| Combat starts | Ever-Ready Shot | Means you rarely start a fight with zero shots |
| You pass a save with Indomitable (level 15) | Teleport 60 feet | Gets you out of a grapple, a breath weapon line or melee range |
| An enemy misses you (level 18) | Reposition and shoot | A free counterattack on the enemy's turn |
| Out of combat | Magical Ammunition and your cantrip | Locks, climbs and minor magic without a Rogue |
Building one
- Ability scores: Dexterity first, Constitution second. Wisdom helps with Perception and saves.
- Fighting Style: Archery, for the flat bonus on every ranged attack roll.
- Weapon Mastery: the longbow's Slow mastery keeps melee enemies from closing the gap.
- Feats: Sharpshooter once Dexterity is high, then Alert so you act early and use Ever-Ready Shot before enemies move.
- Cantrip: Prestidigitation is the more flexible of the two for everyday use.
Who should pick it
Pick it if you want a ranged Fighter with a bit of magic and more to do than "attack, attack". Skip it if you'd rather have real spell slots; the Eldritch Knight or a Ranger gives you those.
