Warrior of the Mystic Arts Monk guide

MonkGishArcana Unleashed

This is the 2024 Monk's first proper spellcaster. You punch, you cast Sorcerer cantrips, and at higher levels you stun a target and then hit it with a spell it can barely resist.

Verdict

A fun, busy subclass for players who like tracking resources. The level 6 Focus-for-slots trade is what makes it work: you can lean into spells on one day and martial arts on the next. Not one for a first character, because you juggle Focus Points, spell slots and a lot of options.

How it plays

Early on you're a Monk with two extra cantrips, which already gives you a ranged option for enemies you can't reach. At level 6 the subclass opens up: cantrips start fitting into your attack routine, and Focus Points and spell slots become one shared pool you can move in either direction. From then on, each short rest is a small budget decision about how much you want to punch versus cast.

Features by level

LevelFeatureWhat it does, in short
3SpellcastingLearn two Sorcerer cantrips and a small set of prepared spells. Wisdom is your casting ability.
6Mystic Fighting StyleSwap one Unarmed Strike in your Attack action for a Sorcerer cantrip.
6Mystic FocusTurn Focus Points into spell slots, or spell slots back into Focus Points.
11Focused StrikeEach Stunning Strike you attempt, pass or fail, leaves the target at Disadvantage on saves against your spells until the start of your next turn.
17Improved Mystic Fighting StyleSwap two Flurry of Blows strikes for a level 1 or 2 spell.

Feature names and levels follow two post-release breakdowns of the book (DungeonMister and Brandes Stoddard, September 2026), which agree with each other and with Wizards' preview on what each feature does. We haven't seen the printed text ourselves, so check your copy for exact wording.

The stun combo

This is the reason to play the subclass at higher levels. Here's how a turn comes together from level 11:

  1. Hit and stun. Land an Unarmed Strike and spend a Focus Point on Stunning Strike. The target makes a Constitution save.
  2. Focused Strike adds the penalty. Whether the target passes or fails the Constitution save, it has Disadvantage on saves against your spells until the start of your next turn.
  3. Follow with a save spell. Pick something with a nasty failed-save effect. At 17, Flurry of Blows can deliver that spell in place of two punches.
  4. If the stun fails, the penalty still applies, so the spell is still worth casting. The stun is a bonus, not a requirement.

Building one

  • Ability scores: Dexterity and Wisdom, as for any Monk. Your spells run on Wisdom too, so one score covers Ki saves and spell saves.
  • Cantrips: one ranged damage cantrip (Fire Bolt or Ray of Frost) plus one utility pick like Minor Illusion or Mage Hand.
  • Feats: Mobile or Alert early; War Caster if your spells need concentration.
  • Focus budget: keep at least one Focus Point in reserve for Stunning Strike once you reach level 11.

Who should pick it

Pick it if you've played a Monk before and want more options each turn. Skip it if you want a simple, hard-hitting Monk; the Warrior of the Open Hand is easier to run.
