Verdict
Simple and strong. The 2024 rewrite folds the old first-turn bonus into Dreadful Strike, a short pool of extra psychic hits, and keeps the initiative bonus that made the subclass famous. It plays well as long as you remember to spend your uses early.
How it plays
You roll high for Initiative, run 10 feet further than anyone expects, and open with a weapon hit that carries Dreadful Strike. After that you play a normal Ranger with Hunter's Mark and a bow. Darkvision and the Invisible-in-darkness rider make dark dungeons your home ground, though it only hides you from creatures that depend on Darkvision, not from everything that can see.
One change from the old version matters: the extra weapon attack on the first turn is gone. In its place you get a limited number of 2d6 hits, so spending them in the first round, when the target is least likely to be dead, is the efficient play.
Features by level
| Level | Feature | What it does, in short |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Dread Ambusher | Three parts: +10 feet Speed on the first turn of each combat, your Wisdom modifier added to Initiative, and Dreadful Strike (extra 2d6 Psychic damage on a weapon hit, once per turn, Wisdom modifier uses per Long Rest, minimum 1). |
| 3 | Umbral Sight | Darkvision 60 feet (or +60 feet if you already have it). Entirely in Darkness, you are Invisible to creatures that rely on Darkvision to see you there. |
| 3 | Gloom Stalker Spells | Always prepared: Disguise Self (3), Rope Trick (5), Fear (9), Greater Invisibility (13), Seeming (17). |
| 7 | Iron Mind | Wisdom saving throw proficiency. If you already have it, pick Intelligence or Charisma instead. |
| 11 | Stalker's Flurry | Dreadful Strike damage becomes 2d8, and using it can also trigger a second attack against a different nearby creature (Sudden Strike) or a Wisdom save to frighten the target and creatures near it (Mass Fear). |
| 15 | Shadowy Dodge | Reaction: impose Disadvantage on an attack roll against you, then teleport up to 30 feet to a space you can see. |
First-round damage maths
How much does Dreadful Strike add to an opening turn? The table models a longbow Ranger with the Archery style, Hunter's Mark active (d6), two attacks on the turn, against AC 15. Crits are ignored to keep it readable. Level 5 uses Dexterity +3, level 11 uses Dexterity +4.
| Level | Attack bonus | Hit chance | Two attacks (no Dreadful Strike) | Dreadful Strike adds | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | +8 | 70% | 15.4 | 6.4 | 21.8 |
| 11 | +10 | 80% | 19.2 | 8.6 | 27.8 |
The bonus is the average 2d6 (7) at level 5 or 2d8 (9) at level 11, times the chance that at least one of your two attacks hits (91% and 96%). It lifts the turn by roughly 40% at level 5 and 45% at level 11. Compare that with a single extra weapon attack, which would add about 7.7 expected damage at level 5: Dreadful Strike is slightly better per use, but limited.
The limit is the real cost. With Wisdom +3 you get three uses per Long Rest, so the table's number is what you can reach in the first three fights of the day, not every round. Level 11's Sudden Strike also lets one use make a free attack on a different enemy within 5 feet of the target, which the table does not count.
Building one
- Ability scores: Dexterity and Wisdom first (attacks, AC, Initiative, uses of Dreadful Strike), Constitution third.
- Weapon plan: a longbow is the standard pick. Dual short swords or rapiers also work if you accept the melee risk.
- Skills: Stealth is close to mandatory. Perception and Insight round it out.
- Feats: Alert is redundant (you already have Initiative); take Sharpshooter or Crossbow Expert for damage, or Resilient (Constitution) to protect concentration on Hunter's Mark.
- Armor: studded leather early, breastplate if you will stand near the front.
Who should pick it
Pick it for a Ranger that is good in dungeons, loud on the first turn and easy to run. Skip it if your campaign is mostly daylight overland travel; Umbral Sight and the ambush features then matter much less.
